The goals

  • Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day
  • Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger
Are we getting any closer to these goals in 2007? Have a look at this table.

Living on 1$ a day

What if all you have to live on is one dollar a day? What can you buy? What can you pay for? Can you educate your children? Can you feed them or yourself? You have no job and there are no jobs in your city or maybe even country.

........................................What would you do?.............................................Is this fair?................................................

It is estimated that there are 1000000000 people in the world who live on less than 1$ a day. That is one billion people. We say they live in extreme poverty. These people are in what we call a poverty trap. They are so poor that they cannot get the food to get the energy to work to get more money to get the food to get the energy to work to get the food... They are so poor that they cannot educate themselves to get a slightly better job which may pay for more. They are trapped in a state of poverty.

The world agrees that these people must be helped out of this situation.
