The goals

  • Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling
Are we getting any closer to these goals in 2007? Have a look at this table.

The Problem

About 113 million children do not go to school. They do not learn to read or write. They cannot even sign their own name, and will not be able to do so when they are adults. How will they be able to participate in society? What future will they have?

Education allows people to learn even more. It allows them to find out about the world. With an education you can improve your life at home. With education you can get a job which pays more. Education is the key out of poverty. And making sure that everyone gets at least a primary education means that the adults of the future will all be able to read, write and do sums.

Why do these children not go to school? Sometimes there is no school close enough. It would take 2 hours to walk there, or maybe even more. Sometimes the family needs the children to help out at home. Often there is no money to pay the school, even though it may cost only $80 a year to go to school. But if you are extremely poor that is a fortune! Sometimes the children do not get enough to eat and do not have the energy to go to school. There are many reasons why children do not go to school. But this has to change!
