Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.
Are we getting any closer to these goals in 2007? Have a look at this table.
The Problem
In many cultures girls get less rights than boys. We want to have gender equality, however, and allow all humans to reach their full potential. This means that they should be able to use all their talents to improve their life. The first step is to provide girls with the same educational opportunities as boys.
Educating women has advantages for everyone. They get less children. This means the family needs less money to survive. These children are usually healthier and they often go to school. Educated women are able to take jobs that pay more. They can help the family get out of poverty. Making sure that girls get an education as well as boys will help us achieve the other UN Millenium Development Goals.
We have been able to improve gender inequality in many parts of the world. But there is still work to be done.
